When living in one’s very own four walls, people utter the desire, “This is where I want to grow old!" However, when retirement does come along other problems follow that weren't considered before. Doors are too narrow, apartments aren't on the ground floor or kitchens have cupboards and appliances that are just simply too high. That may not pose a problem yet, but for people in wheelchairs, for example, these things can be a huge burden. This must be considered when planning new building projects, as the average population is growing older and older. The official for the disabled of the Federal Government, Hubert Hüppe, is aware of this and has taken a look at the latest developments on "barrier-free housing" at the REHACARE in Düsseldorf.
