The Disability Rights Commission's Open4All campaign, launched on a year ahead of the new legislation, provides information and advice for both - service providers and citizens with a disability.
Thus, on the website for this campaign www.drc.org.uk/open4all , your rights as a disabled customer are clearly stated and many of the frequently asked questions answered.
But shop-owners and service providers should be interested in the site as well, as it offers practical advice on how to cater better for the needs of people with disabilities. The case-studies, top tips and FAQs are more than valuable – as disabled customers have an annual spending power of £50 billion.
But, as Bert Massie, Chairman of the DRC, comments on the campaign:
"Awareness of the new duties among business is worryingly low. According to recent research fewer than half of businesses surveyed were aware of the impending changes. The DRC is urging businesses to positively engage with this issue as soon as possible and to listen to the advice being offered in our Open 4 All Campaign. The message is clear; bad access is bad for business.”
