Glue Ear Leaflet Awarded

13/11/2009

Glue ear leaflet published by the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) has been highly commended by the British Medical Association (BMA) in their 2009 Patient Information Awards.

The leaflet, written for families, offers impartial and up-to-date information and advice on the conditions, symptoms and management of glue ear in deaf children. It is also available in Welsh, Urdu, Bengali and Punjabi.

The judging panel for the BMA’s Patient Information Awards praised the publication’s content and design: ”I really like this leaflet. It is laid-out very well and the information is clear and easily accessible by the use of layout, colour and images. The language is very clear, non-patronising and the informal tone makes it parent-friendly. The information on research into glue ear is very useful.”

Ruth Wallace, NDCS Head of Information and Publications, who attended the BMA awards ceremony, commented: “Glue ear is one of the most common childhood conditions yet it can be very often mistaken for stubbornness and rudeness. As a result, many children with glue ear are labelled as ‘difficult’, rather than being offered the right support. With this in mind, the NDCS Glue ear leaflet is an invaluable information source for parents who suspect their child has glue ear and I am therefore grateful to the BMA for recognising our effort in putting this publication together”.

Free copies of the leaflet can be obtained from the NDCS Helpline by calling 0808 800 8880 or emailing helpline@ndcs.org.uk, or a PDF file can be downloaded from www.ndcs.org.uk.
