The curtain rises for actors with physical disabilities. Up to now they are rarely seen, but due to the Academy for Performing Arts adk in Ulm, Germany, they can achieve a officially recognized qualification. The Topic of the Month May shows how it all began and how the students work.

Adopting different roles is the task of the drama students at the academy of visual arts in Ulm (adk). Four of them are disabled. Only in this small German city they can be trained professionally to become an actor – in the first integrative studies for disabled people in Europe.

Jana Zöll sits with red cheeks in her wheelchair in front of the stage in the rehearsal room of the drama school Akademie für Darstellende Künste adk in Ulm, Germany. The 22-year old has rehearsed a scene from “Romeo and Juliet” just now. Although she is small in stature and has osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) she can study drama. For at the adk handicapped people can study together with people who are not disabled - this is unique in Europe. Jana Zöller spoke with REHACARE.de about the school, her progress and the difficulties.
