Some have a handicap and are gay; some raise a disabled child without a partner. There are persons who seemingly are on the margins of society because their life form is different than those of most other people. Nevertheless, they do not inescapably have to stand outside. They are demanded twice: they have a handicapped child and no partner. Mostly mothers are the ones who care for their children after a separation and their own needs are rarely satisfied. However, scarcely anybody seems to be interested in this fact. For 3,5 years Ingrid Gerber has been leading a self-help group in Bonn, Germany, for women in such a situation within the scope of the VAMV, an association of single mothers and fathers. Her oldest son Marcel (11) is a wheel chair driver. REHACARE.de talked with her about her experiences as a single mother of a handicapped child.

Somehow they are caught between two worlds: disabled people who are being attracted to the same sex encounter lots of bias and ostracism. So much the better when they know that they are not alone with their emotions.
