Signing Success as Camelot Claims a World First

The story of the famous jousting tournament at Lancashire's Camelot Theme Park was relayed in British Sign Language for the first time ever during the most successful Learn to Sign Week to date.

The north-west theme park had an interpreter for the action packed event at the UK's only permanent jousting arena to help raise awareness of British Sign Language.

The initiative, thought to be a world first, was organised by the British Deaf Association, to mark the final weekend of its annual national Learn to Sign Week campaign, October 6 - 12th.

Children from the Bolton Deaf Children and Youth Society's Ear 4 Kidz group, along with pupils from local schools, including a group from Chorley All Saints C. E School, were among the audience for the special show, which wowed the crowds.

BDA spokesperson Sarah Murray said: "The event was a great success and was fantastic to watch. The enthusiasm shown by Camelot Theme Park not only provided the general public with a great day out, but has helped raise awareness of BSL, provided equal access for Deaf visitors, and will hopefully encourage others to do the same.

"I'd like to personally thank our interpreter for the day, Chijoke Obassi, who single-handedly interpreted the day's events to all the visitors."

Camelot Theme Park's marketing manager Sandra Dempsey commented: "We were delighted to be approached to support such a worthwhile cause. Our staffs have been learning sign language too which we hope will be useful for communicating with visitors in the future. As far as we know we are the first theme park in the world to tell the adventures of King Arthur and his Knights in sign language so we are thrilled."; Source: British Deaf Association
