Two lines appear on the test strip. You are pregnant! What happens next, is something particularly women with learning difficulties are asking themselves. For them, such a change is not an easy one. How mother and child can live happily with each other despite the mental disability and how the offspring deals with this, is our Topic of the Month May.

 
 

Becoming a mother is not hard, but being a mother is very hard. Especially for women with a mental disability, parenthood doesn’t come easy. In order for them to successfully master every day life with a child, they can apply a concept which is especially tailored to fit them: Facilitated Parenthood.

People with mental disabilities are often labeled as “eternal children.” When they become parents, their environment challenges whether they are up to the task. Dietke Sanders, a graduate psychologist, investigated the situation of children with mentally disabled parents in her research project. REHACARE.de talked to her about reversed roles and proud children.
