Agreements Signed for Paralympic Family Hotels

Agreements Signed for Paralympic Family Hotels

The agreements were signed by ATHENS 2004 Managing Director, Ioannis Spanudakis, and Michael Koth, General Manager of the Athenaeum Intercontinental and Bob Jensch General Manager of the Ledra Marriott at a ceremony held in the Aphrodite lounge of the Athenaeum Intercontinental.

Journalists, photo-reporters and television crews had earlier been given a tour of the rooms and interiors of the hotels in areas where adjustments have been made so that they are now accessible for persons with disabilities, and in areas that were already accessible.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ioannis Spanudakis dwelt on the importance of the Paralympic Games as the second largest sporting event on our planet. He pointed out that six of the nineteen Paralympic sports will be held at the Helliniko Olympic Complex and several will be held in the broader Coastal Zone (Peace and Friendship Stadium, Agios Kosmas Olympic Centre). This will make access from the hotels to these areas extremely quick and easy.

He described as a noteworthy aspect of the preparation the fact that "Greece is acquiring hotels accessible to persons with disabilities – a significant legacy for the country and especially for tourism in the years to come”. At Games-time, he said, ATHENS 2004 will have all the necessary personnel to provide accreditation, enable transport, manage ticketing, and so any other administrative work necessary for the best possible hospitality.

In a brief speech, Paralympic Games General Manager, Ioanna Karyofylli, said she was optimistic about the successful hosting of the Paralympic Games. She also mentioned plans to transfer most of the IOC operations to the two hotels, where various commissions will hold meetings and monitor the Games on a daily basis.
