Rugby: GB Eighth in Demolition Derby

The British squad have been using the Demolition Derby in Birmingham, Alabama and the earlier Colorplast International in Florida to help select their squad for the Athens 2004 Paralympics.

Great Britain's campaign got underway well at the Derby with a 24-19 win over an American side Frazier TNT, followed by 29-22 victory over Japan, enabling GB to top Pool D.

That put Britain into a second round group with Canada, the USA and German Rebels. Britain started the second stage well with a 36-35 victory over the strong Rebels side, but then suffered a 24-33 defeat to the USA and a 39-32 defeat to Canada.

That pitched Britain into a 7th/8th place play-off against the German Rebels, which Britain lost 34-32.

The British side, reigning European Champions, had finished in sixth place at the annual Colorplast International in Florida a week earlier.

Britain took 15 players to America for the two tournaments and have to reduce that to a squad of 12 for the Athens 2004 Paralympics, which get underway on 17th September.

The GB wheelchair rugby team finished outside the medals in sixth at the Sydney 2000, but Britain was second in the overall medals table, with only the host nation above them.
