Deaf Speed Dating Event in London

Deaf Speed Dating Event in London

The event organiser, Alan Llorente, comments: "There are 112,000 profoundly or severely deaf people in Greater London, many of whom use British Sign Language (BSL) as their first language, but – to my knowledge – there aren't any dating events designed for them, so we've created one. We're hoping that the concept will really interest the deaf community for whom speed dating is a relatively new idea. So far we've had a number of people sign up but there are still spaces available for other BSL users that are looking for love!”

The Passionflirt deaf dating event, which is being held at Grand Central in Hoxton, London, is open to anyone (deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people), provided they are fluent in BSL. The evening will follow a simple format - those attending will meet a series of people, with whom they will have a limited amount of time before moving on to meet someone else. At the end of the night, score cards – used throughout the evening to keep track of those people you liked – will be collected in, and, if matches are found, the organisers then put those people in touch with each other.

Nicky Wilson, Events Manager, RNID says: "We're delighted Alan, one of RNID's community fundraisers, has developed this deaf speed dating event. For many deaf people, speed-dating is a new phenomenon, but if it provides an opportunity for BSL users to meet new people then that has to be a good thing.”

The evening will kick off at 7pm and will cost £15 per person.
Places are available for 60 people i.e. 30 men, 30 women and are available on a first come first served basis.

An interpreter will be on hand throughout the evening to facilitate everyone's experience.
