Stylish exerciser for the disabled Community
WELLINGTON, New Zealand: Here is the new ultra lightweight, stylish exerciser for the disabled community
Phillip Thorn was left deaf, blind and paralyzed from the waist down after contracting Meningitis. Phil’s brother clem was amazed at the amount of time and effort that had to be spent by carers and staff at the ISIS center on basic physiotherapy, Clem looked at currently available equipment on the market to help his brothers rehab but nothing ticked all the boxes so the Youbike idea was formed. Two years later after hundreds of hours of development and research the YouBike has arrived.
Grant Marris the MD of Youbike worked with Clem to bring together all aspects of the idea and bring it to a stage of being a commercial product.
Grant comments ‘ our aim was simple, develop a product that was lightweight to enable ease of use in a bed-mounted situation, accessible by wheelchair and simple to use. We also decided why not make the product look attractive too, so much of the current equipment available we thought looked too medical and somewhat condescending to the disabled community, just because you have a disability does not mean you have no style”
The YouBike was designed to answer a particular problem for bed bound patient’s who needed access to exercise equipment for the upper and lower body. The key design parameters were that the YouBike had to be easy to handle for patients and caregivers, this has resulted in a product that weighs less than 16kgs!
The worldwide launch of the Youbike will be at the REHACARE show in Dusseldorf 10-13th October 2012 stand no D28 Hall 3.
