Darleen Jobber wants to show people that she is living a happy life with her disability. For her this is no contradiction. The young woman wishes that people talk to each other more often in order to get rid of their fears of contacts. What she thinks about jokes about her disability and what kind of effect Facebook likes have on her, she tells us on REHACARE.com.
Name: Darleen Jobber Age: 20 City: Rural district Heidekreis, Germany Occupation: Trainee as managaement assistant in office management Impairment: Dysmelia on both sides (I have a below-knee prosthesis and also orthesis.)
Darleen Jobber: The last time. Hard to tell. I laugh very often – also if somebody makes a (kind) joke about my disability.
What have you always been wanting to do and why have you never done this so far?
Darleen Jobber: I have been thinking about a driver license for a scooter for a long time. But despite the financial aspect I am also afraid to endanger others on the streets because I'm so chaotic.
Which person has influenced you most?
Darleen Jobber: There are a lot. Most of all my mother. She showed me from the very beginning that I do not have to be ashamed because of my disability. But also many people who like my Facebook fanpage have influenced me. To hear/read that I encourage others is an incredible feeling and shows me that it is completely right to go public with my story.
You have the chance to become the German Federal Commissioner for the Disabled. What would you do first?
Darleen Jobber: Gummy bears for everybody! ;-) Seriously: First I would bring together people with and without disabilities. Nowadays everybody is talking about the importance of inclusion, but at the same time they are afraid of contact with disabled people. This is quite contradictory, isn't it?
Your life is made into a film: Who would represent you?
Darleen Jobber: I would represent myself. Who else could do better?
I would like to be ...
Darleen Jobber: myself – but not always so hungry and tired.
Which questions would you like answered the most?
Darleen Jobber: What did the doctors think when they saw me after I was born?
What I finally want to say...
Darleen Jobber: Before you start feeling sorry for disabled people, just as them how they would describe their life. My answer would be: Disabled ... but very happy.
