Emma Purcell – That's how she rolls

"Music can change the world because it can change people", said Bono of U2. For Emma Purcell music is everything and always around her. Well, the 24-year old British has a weakness for words, either written or sung or performed on a stage. What her dreams are and why J.K. Rowling influenced her, she tells us at REHACARE.com.

What makes you laugh?

Emma Purcell: My pets, a dog & rabbit, doing crazy things; innuendos/adult humour, comedy gigs and TV shows (The Last Leg is my favourite).

What have you always been wanting to do and why have you never done this so far?

Emma Purcell: My dream job is to be a music journalist. I graduated from university in 2016 but have struggled to find employment due to lack of quality care and unable to travel independently. Alternatively I would like to be an author and become a best selling writer.

Which person has influenced you most? And why?

Emma Purcell: My biggest influence is J.K Rowling. I’ve grown up with Harry Potter since I was 3 and been passionate about writing ever since. My dream journalism interview would be with J.K Rowling herself.

You have the chance to become the Commissioner for the Disabled in your country. What would you do first?

Emma Purcell: Make all social services view the lack of quality care we currently have and make everyone who has direct payments be given a minimum of £1000 per week for care costs. Plus all disabled people are entitled to some healthcare (CHC) funding too.

Emma Purcell: My love of music (rock/alternative). It comes everywhere with me and going to live gigs and festivals is what I live for.

I would like to be ...

Emma Purcell: As independent as possible, employed and have a more active social life.

What else I wanted to say about me...

Emma Purcell: I also have a hobby in acting and have been involved in numerous school productions and youth theatre groups over the past 12 years. I’m a contributing writer for Disability Horizons and a member of the Content Advisory Group at the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK. I took part in the Mencap Journalism Awards in 2017 and won 2nd place for my radio entry about disability attitudes. Part of the prize was for all the winners to visit their head offices in London.
