Georg Kreiter was immediately taken with the speed and freedom of monoskiing when he first tried the sport for himself in 2006. Although he ended his sports career two years ago, he can't get away from monoskiing. He tells REHACARE.com what else is part of a good day for him besides sports and how he rolls otherwise.
Name: Georg Kreiter Age: 36 City: Egling, Germany Occupation: media designer / former paralympic athlete in monoskiing / co-trainer / speaker Impairment: paraplegic after a traffic accident
Georg Kreiter: Very much. But for a perfect day, you need sun, sports and family/friends.
Which auxiliary means or daily living aids are indispensable for you?
Georg Kreiter: Everything that keeps me mobile! Wheelchair, car, handbike, et cetera.
What would you like to see from society and your fellow people in dealing with people with disabilities?
Georg Kreiter: That you don't have to ask anymore if there could be a problem with a wheelchair... (when traveling, in a hotel, restaurant or at the cinema).
Which assistive device would urgently need to be invented and/or improved?
Georg Kreiter: Wheelchairs should be able/allowed to fly! ;-)
What has been your biggest challenge so far that you have mastered – and what has helped you to do so?
Georg Kreiter: I think that was my moped accident at the age of 17 and the following months in hospital and rehab. What helped me then as well as now: my family/friends, sports and definitely the sun! ;-)
What can the assistive technology industry learn from the Corona pandemic to make life easier and/or better for people with disabilities in the future?
Georg Kreiter: That it is not only about money, but actually the person is in the foreground! A handbike, for example, should not cost more than a bicycle.
If nothing would be impossible: Who would you like to meet one day and why? Georg Kreiter: Peter Pan in Neverland. I'm sure there are flying wheelchairs there! ;-)
What I finally want to say...
Georg Kreiter: Look ahead, pursue your goals and live your life. But never stop dreaming!
