Self-employed and mother of two – with these characteristics Gina Doormann often cannot afford to be ill. And if an invisible disability like MS is added, she gets to hear that she would not look ill at all. Reason enough for her to blog about her life for that very reason. What she is up to and which why questions she asks herself, she tells us on REHACARE.com.
Name: Gina Doormann Age: 35 City: Hamburg, Germany Occupation: Freelance copywriter and blogger Impairment: I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in February 2017. So far fortunately (still?) without disability.
Gina Doormann: My husband and I, we have a very special kind of humor – I can laugh tears.
What have you always been wanting to do and why have you never done this so far?
Gina Doormann: With me it is not about spectacular things like parachute jumps or a circumnavigation of the world. But I always wanted to live and work abroad for a long time. The fact that I haven't (yet) done it is rather due to boring, banal circumstances such as compulsory schooling and the care situation.
Which person has influenced you most? And why?
Gina Doormann: I cannot say that there is THE ONE person who has led me in this or that direction. It was always conversations with certain people in the respective situations that encouraged me to go my own way – or to leave it alone.
You have the chance to become the Commissioner for the Disabled. What would you do first?
Gina Doormann: I would significantly promote the training of assistance dogs and then enable disabled people, whose lives could be facilitated by a dog with special training, to become assistance dog owners.
In the beginning Gina Doormann wanted more time for herself and her dog. Then also for the children who followed. Today – with the diagnosis MS – she knows that time has taken on a whole new meaning. She also writes about these experiences in her blog garnichtkrank.de (which means: not ill at all).
What is especially near and dear to you?
Gina Doormann: Fairness, equality and honesty are close to my heart. For my children, it is very important to me that they accept each person as he or she is and looks. They should take it with them that it is not outward appearances, possessions or status that affect our relationship with other people.
I would like to...
Gina Doormann: have arrived one day. Driven by "so much to do in one lifetime" I need constant change, so much is constantly changing. And because this is really exhausting in the long run, a feeling of peace and quiet and being at home would be a very welcome change.
Which question would you like answered the most?
Gina Doormann: Why? "Why" is the question word that drives me the most. It can be about the most diverse things. From basic things like "Why did it get me?" to everyday things like "Why do the most expensive and biggest cars always park the bike lane?" or "Why do you have to drive such a car in the big city?"
What I finally want to say...
Gina Doormann: A lot is a matter of attitude. After realizing that I am incurable and seriously ill, I could now collapse and simply suffer. But I can also continue as before – and perhaps even more intensively. And better!
