Multicultural and diverse Berlin – this is where Heiko Mersch lives. However, he dreams of going somewhere else – far away: he wants to ride with his bicycle through the Outback of Australia. Where and with whom he wants to make a few fine adjustments and why of all things a woman should play the leading role in the movie of his life, he tells us at REHACARE.com.
Name: Heiko Mersch Age: 45 City: Berlin Occupation: Care assistant and model Impairment: Since my accident when I was seven years old, I wear an orthoprosthesis on my lower leg. Without that I can only walk using crutches.
Heiko Mersch: One hour ago, while one of my cats probably has been hunting a mouse while he was asleep.
What have you always been wanting to do and why have you never done this so far?
Heiko Mersch: My big dream has always been to ride with my bicycle through the Outback of Australia to Ayers Rock. Until now it did not fail because of my missing courage, but because of the missing money.
Which person has influenced you most?
Heiko Mersch: A lot of people who accompanied me through my life. Every new meeting and experience with people who go through life with their eyes open – they inspire me.
You have the chance to become the German Federal Commissioner for the Disabled. What would you do first?
Heiko Mersch: Making people with impairment more present in public. Every person is equal und should also be treated like this. Furthermore, I would change the name of the Federal Commissioner into "Visibility Commissioner". Because we are not disabled, it’s the conditions of society.
Your life is made into a film: Who would represent you?
Heiko Mersch: According to the outer appearance, of course Brad Pritt ;-) Just a joke. No, seriously: Meryl Streep. She has been and always will be my favorite actress. I would like to see her humorous, emphatic and multifaceted competence in the story of my life. I would like to be ...
Heiko Mersch: ...in the heads of some people, especially in the heads of politicians. I would like to make some fine adjustments in the prefrontal cortex, to make sure they use their mind in a better way.
Which questions would you like answered the most?
Heiko Mersch: Will the human kind ever learn from mistakes and respect the environment some day and not destroy the hand that keeps us alive?
What I finally want to say...
Heiko Mersch: Go through your life with open eyes like children, be curious und do not let anybody tell you how to live your life.! Be courageous und proud of what and who you are. Because we only have one life. So enjoy it to the fullest!
