For a long time Ilka Brühl lacked a healthy self-confidence. Because of her cleft face, self-doubt gnawed at her. A long way and many photo shoots later, her journey is not yet over, but the dreamer and optimist wants to make the world a better place. Who helped her on her way and how she wants to help others, she tells us at REHACARE.com.
Ilka Bruehl: Fortunately so much. I like to laugh and I laugh a lot. My cats and animals in general, for example, can cheer me up incredibly – but I can also laugh at myself very well.
What have you always been wanting to do and why have you never done this so far?
Ilka Bruehl: Publish a book. As a total bookworm and dreamer I dreamed as a young girl of publishing my own book. I've been working on a picture book for children that deals with being different for a long time now. I haven't published it yet, because my perfectionism stands in my way. But I have made it my firm intention to publish it this year.
Which person has influenced you most? And why?
Ilka Bruehl: It's not that easy to answer that question. This is an interplay of several people. On the one hand there are my parents and sister, who have always supported me and made me feel that I am lovable, even if I didn't believe it myself. And they have always radiated such an unshakeable confidence that everything will be fine. And also my friend, who loves and supports me unconditionally. But also so many people, with whom you don't have much to do, but who inspire you incredibly, like photographers, bloggers etc.. I am so incredibly grateful for the great people and encounters in my life.
You have the chance to become the Commissioner for the Disabled. What would you do first?
Ilka Bruehl: To give me a comprehensive picture of the grievances and to talk to those affected about what could be improved in their situation.
Ilka Bruehl wants to give the little ones the idea that being different is not a bad thing. She is already working on a picture book, which will be published this year.
What is especially near and dear to you?
Ilka Bruehl: That everyone takes the time to reflect on themselves a little more frequently and to think about what they could do better. Be it to others or to oneself, like more forbearance or self-love. Because only when we are at peace with ourselves we can act impartially with others. Often it is the little things that make a big difference. That is why I try to support others in being at peace with themselves. And there is no better feeling than to see that it really helps people.
I would like to be...
Ilka Bruehl: ...in the comfortable situation to have more time for my blog, podcast etc.. At the moment it all runs alongside a full time job, which is sometimes quite difficult because my head is full of ideas and patience is not my strength. When I look far into the future, I would like to be able to say that I have experienced a lot, used a lot of opportunities and gained an incredible amount of experience.
Which question would you like answered the most?
Ilka Bruehl: Are we humans going to get our act together or are we going to ruin this planet?
What I finally want to say...
Ilka Bruehl: You should believe in yourselves. Never let anyone tell you from the outside what you can and cannot do. Only you define your limits and they are usually so much higher than you think. Dream big and actively do something for your goals.
