Lea Raak – That's how she rolls

A misdiagnosis almost cost Lea Raak her life in 2011. This is one of the reasons why she wants to clear up prejudices against diabetes type 1 on her blog. But she also wants to give other people affected a voice. What is close to her heart besides more love and empathy and how she would promote inclusion in Germany, she tells us on REHACARE.com.

What makes you laugh?

Lea Raak: People can make me laugh quit easily, mostly my friends do.

What have you always been wanting to do and why have you never done this so far?

Lea Raak: There are many things I would like to do, but there is nothing I would not dare to do.

Which person has influenced you most? And why?

Lea Raak: I think that I was and am more affected by my diagnosis and events than by individual people. My parents and grandpa have had an impact on me in the sense that they have always given me a loving and safe home.

You have the chance to become the Commissioner for the Disabled. What would you do first?

Lea Raak: Invite people affected and find out with them how Germany can become more inclusive and then gradually implement these things.

Lea Raak writes about her life with diabetes type 1 on her blog insulea.de. She also does not stop at topics such as mental health issues, which often accompany a chronic disease. Her goal is to clear up prejudices and give a voice to those affected.

What is especially near and dear to you?

Lea Raak: Diabetes organizations such as T1International or Life for a Child, which work to ensure that people with inadequate medical care get insulin and do not die of type 1 diabetes.

I would like to be...

Lea Raak: ... on a world trip. ;)

Which question would you like answered the most?

Lea Raak: How type 1 diabetes can be prevented. It is not so important to me not to have a chronic disease, but I wish that in the future people could live without chronic diseases.

Lea Raak: Remember, you're not alone. There are many self-help groups and/or communities online and offline where you can exchange and network!
