2020 is an important year for Paralympic sport. Whether Lukas Schiwy will fly to Tokyo with the national team in sitting volleyball will not be decided until March. Then the attacker and his team-mates will have to give their best in the qualifying tournament in the USA to get a ticket for the Paralympics. What other sports event he has been lacking time for and what he thinks of the REHACARE he tells in HOW WE ROLL.
What have you always been wanting to do and why have you never done this so far?
Lukas Schiwy: I've been wanting to take part in the Cologne Marathon for a while now. So far, however, there has been a lack of preparation time.
Which person has influenced you most? And why?
Lukas Schiwy: What impresses me most is the strength and endurance of my father, who despite a severe autoimmune disease is not losing his way.
You have the chance to become the Commissioner for the Disabled. What would you do first?
Lukas Schiwy: An obligation of Deutsche Bahn to guarantee accessible rail travel. Accessibility is generally an important issue in Germany.
Lukas Schiwy was already a national player at the 2016 Paralympics. Together with his teammates he reached 6th place. The attacker also wants to breathe Paralympic air in 2020. To get this mission accomplished the German Team needs to win their ticket in a qualification tournament in March.
What is especially near and dear to you?
Lukas Schiwy: In addition to my sporting and university career, my family is particularly close to my heart.
I would like to be...
Lukas Schiwy: ... a bird flying south.
Which question would you like answered the most?
Lukas Schiwy: Why have we not yet managed to guarantee comprehensive accessibility in Germany? Why is there still inequality and discrimination against minorities? What would be my possible contribution to clarifying the above questions?
What else I wanted to say...
Lukas Schiwy: For me, REHACARE is more than just a trade fair. It connects people with disabilities and is therefore an important symbol for inclusion and equality of extraordinary people within society.
