Licht: Magnesium alloy is the best choice for wheelchair frame

Materials currently used on wheelchair frames are low-carbon steel, aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy, titanium alloy and carbon fiber. The following are the characteristics of these material properties.

Low-carbon steel
Although the technology of steel pipes and steel plates for wheelchairs is quite mature, through the optimization of components, advanced heat treatment technology and processing technology, the wall thickness of steel pipes and steel plates have reached an ideal thickness under the premise of ensuring performance, and the quality of steel wheelchairs is improving. However, under the requirements of higher lightweight, it is difficult for steel wheelchairs to make breakthroughs.

Aluminum alloy
In recent years, wheelchairs made of aluminum alloys have developed rapidly. Compared with other materials, it has good corrosion resistance, good recyclability, easy processing and forming, and mature surface spraying and anodizing treatment processes. However, under the requirements of heavy-duty wheelchairs, the strength of aluminum alloy materials is insufficient. Aluminum alloy frames are easily deformed or even broken after a period of use.

Magnesium alloy
Magnesium alloys are currently the world's lightest commercial metal structural materials. Compared with other structural materials, magnesium alloys have a series of advantages: superior specific strength and specific stiffness, good casting properties, suitable for high pressure casting, outstanding fatigue memory and better dynamic properties. Compared with metal parts such as steel and aluminum, it has excellent vibration damping properties, good machinability and easy recycling. However, the welding process of magnesium alloys is difficult, and many manufacturers do not have this ability.

Titanium alloy
Titanium alloy has the characteristics of high strength and low density, good mechanical properties, good toughness and corrosion resistance, high heat resistance and non-toxicity. Therefore, titanium alloys are widely used in aerospace, energy and many other fields. The advantages of titanium alloy wheelchairs are firmness, light weight and long service life. Titanium alloys are difficult to process, so their manufacturing costs are high. In terms of cost performance, titanium wheelchair frames are not the best choice.

Carbon fiber
Carbon fiber is a new type of fiber material with high strength and high modulus fiber with a carbon content of more than 95%. The quality of carbon fiber is lighter than that of aluminum, but its strength is higher than that of steel, and it has the characteristics of corrosion resistance and high modulus. However, carbon fiber is a non-environmentally friendly material, the manufacturing cost is high, and the surface treatment options are not diverse. Therefore, in terms of cost performance, carbon fiber wheelchair frames are not the best choice.

Considering the lightweight, individual requirements of surface treatment and processing costs, magnesium alloys are the best choice for wheelchair frames. For every 30% reduction in the weight of the wheelchair frame, the walking resistance will be reduced by about 10%.
