Whether expert staff working in an ambulant or in-patient environment or relatives in one’s own four walls – care and the people working in this sector have many faces. Also more and more researchers and project groups are trying to meet all those sometimes very special requirements and to show the variety of care.

Demographic change is a reality: there are more and more older people in Germany, Europe and all over the world. This increases the percentage of people that need care. They are not only being cared for in professional care facilities but also gradually more often at home in private settings.

Cross-cultural care – personal or professional?

The range of services and information focusing on home-based and outpatient care is quite large. Yet oftentimes these services are not sufficiently targeted towards the sociocultural needs and expectations of people with an immigrant background. Now, the OPEN project that’s sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research wants to change this.

Right now, the care sector is not prepared for this fact yet: drug addicts are getting much older than previously believed. At the same time, many typically age-related restrictions start to appear far earlier with them. This poses new challenges in health care provision.
