Mobility: On the go in road traffic

Bus, subway, taxi or driving your own car – there are many ways to get around on the road. However, not all means of transportation are adapted to the needs of people with different disabilities. In our Topic of the Month September: Mobility: On the go in road traffic you can find out how the German taxi market is supposed to become more inclusive, how people with disabilities can achieve mobility competence and to what extent autonomous driving opens new perspectives.

Whether it’s riding the bus or the train – self-determined participation in public transportation involves some difficulties for many people with disabilities. Among many other things, this is due to broken elevators and a lack of accessibility at stations. That’s why it is crucial that people get informed and educated to get from Point A to Point B as autonomously as possible.

Spontaneous mobility: Inclusion taxi, a taxi for everyone

London, New York, and Sydney already have them – will Berlin be next? We are talking about taxis that have converted to become accessible. While London only issues licenses for wheelchair accessible vehicles, Germany still has a long way to go to get there. The "InklusionsTaxi – Taxi für Alle" project (English: Inclusion Taxi - A Taxi for Everyone) is not afraid to get moving in this direction.

Autonomous driving – Mobility for everyone or wasted potential?

In the 80s, David Hasselhoff saved the world each week. Yet he didn’t play the starring role in Knight Rider, it was actually his car KITT. Much of what was fiction back then is now a reality. We have navigation devices that talk to us, automatic lane keeping assist systems, adaptive cruise control, and cars that can park without our help. How long until we might simply be a passenger in our own car and just get in, name the destination and arrive safely without laying our hands on the wheel? And what options in terms of mobility does autonomous driving offer people with disabilities?
