Inclusion is a process for society as a whole and affects all areas of life. In the Topic of the Month November REHACARE.com focuses this time on professional life and education. Learn more about positive examples from the school desk to the job, a project that has successfully accompanied young people with disabilities through their vocational training, as well as a prospective carpenter in a wheelchair and a deaf pastor.

A solid, average career in Germany includes a good education, an apprenticeship or university studies and ultimately, a job that might even be a vocation. Articles 24 and 27 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) enshrine access to an inclusive education and the right to work. So how come people with disabilities often have to fight for this right in Germany? And having said that, what are some encouraging aspects in this setting?

The !nkA project: "Vocational schools lack inclusion experience"

Germany needs more inclusive apprenticeship opportunities. That’s something all stakeholders of the recently completed "Inclusive vocational training of young people with and without disabilities" (German: Inklusive Ausbildung von Jugendlichen mit und ohne Behinderung) project – !NkA in short – agree on. After all, young people with disabilities are far too often underestimated. Nearly 40 adolescents were able to unleash their full potential within the scope of the project.

Inclusion in practice: On the right career path

Choosing a career is a deeply personal and intimate decision. Yet this path is also shaped by many external factors. If you are a person in a wheelchair of if you are deaf, accessing the primary labor market might not be an easy feat. But it’s definitely possible. David Völzmann and Felizitas Böcher show us how they did it.
