Families of serious ill or disabled children not only face great emotional challenges, but often also logistical and financial ones. It is precisely these problems that the pilot network "Flying Hope e. V.", founded in 2010, addresses. In the meantime, 30 pilots have volunteered their time and aircraft to help children. Every week, free of charge, they fly children to and from hospices and hospitals for important medical appointments or operations. The children and their families are relieved by the significant minimisation of long and exhausting journeys and the special moment of flying is a beautiful and bonding shared memory. This was also the case for the eight-year-old passenger Lasse: the deaf boy from Essen-Mülheim, who has an intestinal disease, was operated on 14th December in Rostock and flown safely back home 24 hours after the operation by Andreas Funke, an experienced pilot and flight instructor. This spared the boy a car journey of several hours.
"The sparkling children’s eyes in the air and the great gratitude of the parents, to whom we give much more than just a free and efficient transport option, are the most important reasons for me to get involved as an active pilot in the charitable association "Flying Hope e. V. ". The flights for the children are an ideal way to share my enthusiasm for flying and at the same time combine it with a charitable and direct support service," says Andreas Funke, Managing Director of Funke Medical.
