On the go in road traffic

Dear Sir or Madam,

Getting around the city by public transport can be a nuisance. Unfriendly bus drivers, delayed trams and a colorful potpourri of fellow men. For people with disabilities, these are not even the biggest disruptive factors. Find out what's going on in Germany when it comes to locomotion for people with disabilities in our Topic of the Month: Mobility: On the go in road traffic.

Have a nice day,

Topic of the Month

Bus, subway, taxi or driving your own car – there are many ways to get around on the road. However, not all means of transportation are adapted to the needs of people with different disabilities. In our Topic of the Month September: Mobility: On the go in road traffic you can find out how the German taxi market is supposed to become more inclusive, how people with disabilities can achieve mobility competence and to what extent autonomous driving opens new perspectives.

"Long cane for children is a 'facilitator'– the chance to independently accomplish something"

We asked ...

A long cane (also known as a white cane) affords people with visual impairments independence and actual freedom of movement. Even blind children should get used to long canes as quickly and early as possible. It allows them to playfully perceive their surroundings to where it feels normal and natural for them to move around using this auxiliary aid. The "Anderes sehen e.V." Association (English: A different kind of seeing) has co-developed the long cane for children. REHACARE.com spoke with Ellen Schweizer, the Association’s founder, about the experiences children and parents make with the long cane for blind children and the fact that inclusion is not a burden but can be fun.

Training+Working and Mobility+Travel

The theme park "Work+Training" is devoted to one of the most important conditions for the inclusion of people with disabilities: active participation in working life. However, mobility is also necessary for this purpose. A car can be helpful. Manufacturers will therefore be showcasing the latest developments of car customization in the "Mobility+Travelling" theme park.

Claudia Böhme – That's how she rolls

How we roll

Photo: Claudia Böhme; Copyright: fotoresque
Sometimes lecturers have a greater influence on students than they may be aware of. Claudia Böhme came up with the idea of bringing together blind and visually impaired people and museums, thanks to a suggestion of the student vocational guidance service. Today, the 46-year-old is a cultural mediator. What else she is interested in besides accessibility in museums, she tells us at REHACARE.com.
