REHACARE 2023: Professional participation is possible for all
31.08.2023
People with disabilities have the guaranteed right to be part of the community in all areas of life. But unfortunately, there are still far too many barriers that exclude individuals from the community. This can be the train platform that is not suitable for a wheelchair, or the course of study that is not designed to meet the needs of the deaf. It becomes especially problematic when it would be possible to take up a profession, but barriers of various kinds stand in the way. There are solutions for many fields of work, which could often reduce hurdles. At REHACARE you can try out and get to know these aids.
Sign language communication via laptop is a way for deaf people to communicate.
Professional inclusion is possible
The frustration of many people who are held back professionally because of their disability is understandable. Professional recognition as well as payment for services rendered are essential components of our society. Not only since the shortage of skilled workers should society realize how important it is to help all capable people find work.
REHACARE also wants to make its contribution to this important topic, as Hannes Niemann, Project Director, emphasizes: "This year the focal theme of the trade fair will be people with disabilities at work and/or their integration in professional life – this is one of our key themes that always meets with plenty of interest and makes waves. Centerstage in Hall 6 will be very concrete solutions that flag up what needs to be done to accomplish integration into working life despite impairments, and how workplaces can be re-designed. A whole host of people will be on hand for ideas and discussions. This year’s partners include the state of North Rhine Westphalia, Landschaftsverband Rheinland (English: Rhineland Regional Association), the Federal Employment Agency and German Statutory Accident Insurance."
Digitization enables participation
Among other things, progressive digitization should help to compensate for or regain limitations. For example, workstations in offices that involve screen work or telephone calls can be adapted for people with visual or hearing impairments. Sometimes a keyboard with larger characters is enough or a voice output is all that is needed to enable blind people to work.
People with hearing impairments may possibly benefit from a hearing amplifier on the phone or the ability to communicate via office software such as Teams. More difficult, but not impossible, is retrofitting workstations for people with mobility impairments. Of course, not every small company is necessarily able to find accessible office space or retrofit it if necessary. But sometimes installing a wheelchair ramp at the entrance is enough to allow access for wheelchair users.

Height-adjustable desks can also be purchased to accommodate all body sizes. Seemingly all small things, but they can make a big difference. Of course, how barriers can be removed must always be considered on a case-by-case basis. Not everything fits everyone. However, giving it some thought is the least of the requirements. Interested employers who would like to remove barriers can also get advice from specialized associations. The various regional associations in Hall 6 will be happy to provide information. In addition, you can find various exhibitors and offers that can be visited during REHACARE 2023 on our trend topic page "Occupation". One or the other inspiration is sure to be there.
