From AI to smart cities: how innovation is advancing inclusion around the world

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming the field of assistive technology. What was once seen as a vision of the future is now becoming a reality through practical applications that can support people with disabilities in their everyday lives.

One important area is communication. AI-powered systems can transcribe spoken language in real time, generate automatic captions, or present information in a more accessible and easier-to-understand format. These applications can help reduce barriers in conversations, at events, and in digital environments.

People with visual impairments can also benefit from AI-powered assistive technologies. Modern systems use artificial intelligence to read text aloud, recognize objects, and describe information from the surrounding environment. Intelligent wearables and camera-based solutions can support navigation and improve access to information.

Artificial intelligence shows particularly strong potential when it complements existing assistive devices and helps people carry out tasks more independently. At the same time, these developments highlight the importance of accessible and responsible design. Only when diverse needs are considered from the outset can AI applications make a meaningful contribution to greater participation and inclusion.

When it comes to technological innovation in rehabilitation, exoskeletons and robotic assistive systems are often at the center of attention. Around the world, research institutions and companies are developing new ways to support people in therapy, mobility, and physically demanding activities.

Asia is currently one of the most dynamic regions in this field. In China, for example, robotic rehabilitation systems and exoskeletons are already being used in therapy and rehabilitation centers. They help people practice movement patterns and gradually regain mobility after neurological conditions or injuries.

Making products and services usable for as many people as possible – that is the core idea behind Universal Design. Rather than removing barriers after they arise, the goal is to prevent them from occurring in the first place.

This approach has played an important role in Scandinavian countries for many years. In Norway, Universal Design is even embedded in political strategies and planning processes as a guiding principle for society.

Sweden provides a recent example of how this concept can be put into practice. The country has introduced specific recommendations for the accessible use of electric vehicle charging stations. These guidelines address factors such as sufficient maneuvering space for wheelchair users, easily reachable controls, and step-free access to charging points.

However, the concept extends far beyond infrastructure. Questions about accessibility are becoming increasingly important in the development of everyday products, digital applications, and clothing. Universal Design demonstrates that inclusion does not begin with adaptation – it begins with the design and development of new solutions.

Designing accessibility from the outset also means considering public spaces, transportation systems, and digital services. After all, people’s ability to move independently and participate fully in society depends largely on how accessible cities and infrastructure are.

Dubai is one example of this approach. For several years, the city has been working to make public spaces, services, and mobility options more accessible. One key foundation is the Universal Design Code, which sets requirements for the accessible design of buildings, pathways, and public facilities.

Smart city concepts can help put these principles into practice. Digital information services, intelligent transportation systems, and accessible navigation tools in public spaces are just a few examples. However, technology alone is not enough. Cities can only become truly inclusive when digital solutions, infrastructure, and the perspectives of people with disabilities are considered together.

Whether in assistive technology, rehabilitation, Universal Design, or inclusive urban planning, many innovations today emerge through international collaboration. Events and platforms across different regions of the world help connect expertise, technologies, and ideas, fostering the exchange of knowledge and best practices.
