Assistive devices for greater independence while eating

Non-slip plates, cutlery with enlarged grips, or special holders – there are many everyday aids available for people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or age-related limitations. These tools help individuals eat independently – without having to rely on assistance from others.

One example of a digital solution is the Bravo Twist – a piece of assistive cutlery that uses sensors to automatically compensate for involuntary hand movements.

The Obi eating robot enables greater independence with severe mobility restrictions.

When mobility is significantly limited or muscle control is impaired, technical solutions are increasingly being used – such as the Obi robot (an adaptive eating device). It moves food from the plate to the mouth at the push of a button and can be individually adapted to users' needs. This allows people with complex impairments to eat independently again.

The robotic arm is commonly used in rehabilitation clinics, care facilities, or even in private homes – depending on individual needs and mobility level. A key advantage is that users remain actively involved in the eating process and can decide for themselves when to take the next bite.
