A collaborative effort for pediatric rehabilitation

The new home-use exoskeleton helps children with mobility impairments participate more actively in everyday life.

The EXPLORER project is a result of collaboration between Marsi Bionics, CSIC, and four major hospitals in Madrid: La Paz University Hospital, 12 de Octubre University Hospital, Niño Jesús Children’s University Hospital, and Gregorio Marañón University Hospital. The initiative is supported by Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities through the PERTE for Vanguard Health program.

Marsi Bionics had previously developed ATLAS 2030, the world’s first pediatric exoskeleton, in partnership with CSIC. However, ATLAS 2030 was limited to clinical settings. The demand for a home-use solution led to the development of the EXPLORER exoskeleton, enabling children with mobility impairments to walk at home, at school, and in public spaces.

A step towards home-based exoskeleton technology

The EXPLORER pediatric exoskeleton, developed by Marsi Bionics and CSIC, designed to enhance mobility for children with gait impairments.

Currently in the prototype stage and awaiting CE certification, the EXPLORER exoskeleton is designed to transition from clinical to personal use. It features four motors that replicate natural muscle functions and offers two operating modes:

Movement intention mode: Assists the user’s strength to facilitate walking.

Automatic mode: Provides continuous movement at a selected speed.

Additionally, the exoskeleton includes an integrated automatic seat that converts the device into a reclining chair, enhancing usability and comfort.

It is adaptable for children aged 2 to 17, ensuring long-term use throughout their developmental stages. By enabling mobility in everyday environments, EXPLORER promotes autonomy and social inclusion, allowing children to participate in daily activities such as playing in the park or attending school.

Clinical trials and research expertise

Nearly 30 researchers from the four Madrid hospitals collaborated with Marsi Bionics engineers and families to develop and refine the exoskeleton. Olga Arroyo, Head of the Rehabilitation Service at Gregorio Marañón University Hospital and President of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Rehabilitation, emphasized:

"Work has been especially focused on conducting a clinical trial to ensure the safety and efficacy of the device. Almost 50 families have actively participated in sessions both at home and outdoors. The aim is to bring the latest technologies closer to the child's immediate environment by encouraging their active participation."
