Rent a sports prosthesis: How the mysportsbox model works

Access to a suitable sports prosthesis is often expensive, bureaucratic, and time-consuming. For many people with limb loss, the desire to return to an active lifestyle remains unfulfilled. With mysportsbox, a new rental model from Ottobock, there is now a flexible alternative: Sports prostheses can be rented for a fixed period and individually configured – without long approval processes or upfront purchase.

Movement made simple – with a model that fits

Buying a sports prosthesis can easily cost several thousand euros – and in many healthcare systems, the cost is not fully covered or may require complex approval procedures. Yet physical activity is a key part of self-determined living and recovery. mysportsbox addresses this gap: As a flexible subscription model, it provides low-barrier access to custom-fitted prosthetic components for sport and exercise.

How it works – example process in Germany

The following steps outline how the mysportsbox model currently works in Germany. Ottobock is actively working on expanding this service to other countries – so similar processes may soon be available internationally.

1. Find a certified partner: Use the mysportsbox partner search to locate a participating orthopedic expert or clinic in your area.

2. Configure your prosthesis: Together with your partner, you’ll define the right components for your goals and activity level – from running blades like the Sprinter to specific sports knee joints.

3. Delivery and fitting: After approximately two to three weeks, your sports prosthesis will be shipped to the selected partner for final fitting and adjustments.

4. Start moving: Once fitted, you can start training immediately. The initial rental period is up to two years and can be extended or ended flexibly.

What you’ll need

To switch between your everyday and sports prosthesis, a Quickchange adapter is required. This adapter allows you to use your existing socket with the new sports component – easily and efficiently. If it’s not already integrated into your current prosthetic setup, your partner will advise on retrofitting options.

More and more people with limb loss want to get active, not just for rehabilitation but for everyday fitness and social connection. With mysportsbox, Ottobock offers a user-friendly solution that helps overcome barriers – and supports participation through movement.

Looking ahead: Expansion planned

While the mysportsbox concept is currently available in Germany, Ottobock is actively preparing for international expansion. In addition, the company is evaluating further rental models for other types of sports prostheses and activity-specific components. The goal: to make movement more accessible – in more places, and for more people.
