Chris D. – That’s how he rolls

Is there a moment in your life that you especially like to look back on?

Most likely the moment I realized that, even as one individual, I could truly make a difference in this world. Through my work with various nonprofit organizations, I came to understand the impact that committed people can have. It means a great deal to me that I was able to make a measurable contribution to organizations whose work ultimately benefits all of us. Knowing that I have helped create a real benefit for society is something that still fills me with pride today.

• My water bottle, because it helps temporarily relieve my circulation problems and reduces the strain on my nervous system.

• My walking stick, because it allows me to continue exploring the world despite my walking impairment. It has given me back a great deal of independence and quality of life.

• My social media project, because documenting my challenges and progress has given me renewed confidence for the future. At the same time, I hope it can also give strength to others and allow me to make a meaningful contribution once again.

Are there topics, projects, or initiatives that are especially close to your heart?

I'm especially passionate about progressive political issues and the work of nonprofit organizations and volunteers. What matters most to me is that, as a society, we work together more closely, act in solidarity, and look beyond our own individual needs more often.

If you could invent your own assistive device, what would it look like and what would it need to do?

I would create an assistive device that could take people anywhere they want to go, regardless of their physical limitations – maybe something like a personal helicopter or a small flying vehicle that completely reimagines individual mobility.

What does REHACARE mean to you personally?

For me, REHACARE means being connected to a community that I now consider myself a part of, and it gives me a renewed sense of hope. It shows that, as a society, we are capable of supporting people with disabilities. At the same time, I associate REHACARE with the hope of future innovations that could improve life for me and for many others with physical disabilities.

Is there anything you would like to say in closing – something that is particularly important to you?

I think it's wonderful that this area is receiving so much attention, because it touches on issues that can affect anyone. Everyone deserves support, no matter what form it takes. Events like REHACARE help raise awareness and bring people together.
