Désirée Dubarry – That’s how she rolls

Which day or moment in your life do you remember most fondly – and why?

One particularly meaningful moment for me was being able to speak again for the first time after a long period on a ventilator. It was the moment I felt like an active part of my own body again, no longer trapped inside it.

Another unforgettable experience was picking up my adapted car – for me, a symbol of newly gained freedom and independence. Both moments showed me how valuable self-determination and freedom are, and how important it is to celebrate even the smallest steps forward.

Which assistive devices are essential in your everyday life – and why?

Several assistive devices are essential in my daily life. First and foremost is my wheelchair, which gives me mobility and independence. An electric drive is also very important, as it allows me to go for relaxed walks with my dog. The front attachment wheel enables me to move safely over gravel paths and grassy terrain.

Another essential item is my foldable reacher, which I can take with me anywhere. Last but not least, my parking pylon is indispensable: I place it behind my car after parking to help prevent other vehicles from blocking me in.

What do you wish from society and from people around you when it comes to interacting with people with disabilities?

I wish for greater understanding, respect, and openness from society and those around me. It’s important to me that we are not judged by our limitations. I hope for more accessibility, genuine equal opportunities, and the ability to actively participate in social life – without prejudice or unnecessary barriers. Encounters with people with disabilities should be seen as natural and enriching.

If nothing were impossible: Who would you like to meet, which place would you like to visit, or which time would you like to experience – and why?

If nothing were impossible, I would love to spend as much time as possible with the people closest to my heart, because they give me endless strength and are a true balm for my soul.

I would also love to travel to the United States and Norway – especially Norway, to see the Northern Lights. I imagine how impressive this natural phenomenon must be and how beautiful it would be to experience moments like these together and create memories that last a lifetime.

Are there any topics or initiatives related to people with disabilities that are particularly important to you?

I care deeply about topics that promote greater self-determination, participation, and visibility for people with disabilities. This includes, above all, accessible mobility and equal access to medical care.

Initiatives that support people with disabilities in sports or personal development are also very important to me – because I have experienced firsthand how much these opportunities can improve quality of life. Equally essential is breaking down prejudices and giving people with disabilities the chance to pursue their own goals and actively participate in society.

Is there something about you that might surprise us?

Over the past eleven years, I have managed to lose half of my body weight, even though I use a wheelchair. My goal is to take part in HYROX this year.
