Lars Weber – That’s how he rolls

Discipline, movement, and inclusion as a path to a self-determined everyday life

Staying active – that is what matters most to Lars Weber. Training and clear goals help him shape each day consciously and stay fit step by step. As a social advisor, he is committed to informing people with disabilities about their rights and opportunities. Since a serious motorcycle accident, he has been living with an incomplete spinal cord injury – an experience that has shaped his perspective on health, movement, and social inclusion. In the REHACARE eMag, he talks about discipline as a strategy for everyday life, about rehabilitation, and why real inclusion has to begin in daily life.

Is there a moment in your life that you especially like to look back on?

My wedding. That moment is still very special to me today because my wife is the driving force in my everyday life. She gives me the motivation to grow older while staying healthy and active.

What has been one of the biggest challenges in your life so far?

Finding my way back into life after the accident and relearning how to walk over many years. What helped me were my wife, my friends, and the motivation that we are given only this one life.

These three assistive supports, strategies, or forms of support are essential in my everyday life:

Therapy, because it allows me to specifically train functions that are limited by my paralysis.
Vehicle adaptations, because they give me the freedom to get around independently and flexibly.
Discipline as a strategy, because it provides structure and helps me stay consistent with my goals. Especially on days when motivation is lacking, discipline helps me keep going.

What matters especially to me is peer counseling on inclusion and participation – supporting people with disabilities in understanding their rights and opportunities, and helping them learn which social benefits may be available to them.

Complete the sentence: A good day for me is when …

… I consciously notice the small things, can laugh, and in the evening realize that I actually followed through on the goals I set for myself.

Is there something that currently gives you strength or helps you feel good in everyday life?

A lot of movement and sports help me feel good. What gives me strength is the desire to use the day well and not waste it.

What does REHACARE mean to you personally?

For me, REHACARE is a great opportunity to make valuable connections, discover new assistive devices, and learn about innovations.

Is there something you would like to say at the end – something that is truly important to you?

What really matters to me is this: life often reflects what we put into it. When we approach others with a positive mindset, we can also receive a lot of positivity in return. That is why it is important to keep looking beyond our own horizon and to live with each other rather than against each other.
