Nika Sky – That’s how she rolls

Showing yourself changes more than you might think

Visibility is about more than simply being seen – it creates connections, builds confidence, and can change the way people perceive disability. For Nika Sky, it also includes a vision of adaptive fashion that makes everyday life more independent and comfortable. In the REHACARE eMag, she talks about her personal journey, innovative assistive technologies, and her goal of creating fashion that adapts to people – not the other way around.

I have dysmelia, and I call my hand "my little hand".

Complete the sentence: A good day for me is when …

… it begins with a mindful morning and time in nature. After that, I love letting my creativity flow into my videos, new designs, and adaptive fashion.

The moment I grew the most was when I started embracing myself and my body and turned my little hand into my greatest strength. I stopped hiding.

I started showing up. That was the hardest – and at the same time the most beautiful – thing I've ever done. It changed my life.

Having the opportunity to receive a myoelectric prosthetic hand made a huge difference. Suddenly, I could use both hands to grasp things. These new possibilities bring me so much joy and make everyday life much easier.

These two assistive devices, strategies, or forms of support are essential in my everyday life:

Acceptance, because it's the key to living with greater peace of mind. Resisting who I am often only creates more suffering.
My myoelectric prosthetic hand, because it gives me freedom and independence in everyday life. Once I truly embraced my little hand, I was able to see just how much an assistive device could support me in my daily life. Every day, it reminds me how technology can expand what's possible.

What would you like to see from society in its approach to people with disabilities or chronic conditions?

Many barriers aren't physical. They're societal. Greater openness, genuine human connection, and visibility can make a real difference. Every person who helps create that makes life a little easier for someone else.

Are there any topics, projects, or initiatives that are particularly close to your heart? What makes them so important to you?

Visibility. When we show the diversity of people, it can change lives. I was eight years old when I met another person with dysmelia for the first time. That feeling of realizing you're not alone is incredibly powerful.

Is there a particular moment in your life that you look back on with special fondness? What makes it so memorable to you?

The moment just before everything begins. Whether it's a fashion show, a TV shoot, or a photo shoot, there's always this special energy in the room. It's a powerful moment, right before everything comes to life.

One memory that stands out is an inclusive fashion show in Berlin with wonderful people like Ayleen Walter and Nadine Schneider. We were backstage, fully styled in our looks, standing behind the curtain just before the show began. You could feel the excitement and anticipation in the air. In just a few seconds, everything would start. Moments like these bring people together, and they stay in my heart. They remain especially meaningful because they led to truly valuable friendships.

What does REHACARE mean to you personally?

REHACARE showcases what's possible through innovation and technology. It's a place where people, ideas, and experiences come together. These are exactly the kinds of innovations that can make everyday life easier for so many people.

Is there anything in your everyday life that currently gives you strength or helps you feel grounded?

Gratitude. When I consciously focus on everything I have, it changes the way I see so many things. Journaling helps me organize my thoughts, and spending time with friends keeps me grounded.

Resting and recharging are just as important as achieving. Everyone should feel they have permission to give themselves that time – especially people with disabilities, chronic conditions, or other invisible challenges.

Adaptive fashion is clothing that adapts to the person. It makes getting dressed easier, improves comfort, and helps people navigate everyday life with greater independence, ease, and confidence.

At the moment, the range of adaptive fashion is still too limited, too expensive, and often not diverse enough. There is a lack of choice, affordable and stylish options, and clothing that truly feels like everyday fashion while meeting a wide variety of needs.

My mission is to create innovative clothing that makes everyday life easier and creates space for ease, joy, and independence. Thoughtfully designed, functional, and stylish.

My vision is to build a brand that sets new standards by designing fashion that naturally adapts to people – not the other way around. A brand that creates more freedom, self-expression, and meaningful participation in everyday life.

Right now, my focus is on designing, researching, and learning from real-world experiences. In the long term, my goal is to create a brand that embodies this vision and makes it accessible to as many people as possible.
