Children’s hospice

A shelter along the way

Balthasar children’s hospice – a place to live and laugh, to die and grieve

“Your child is terminally ill; there is nothing we can do for your child.” A diagnosis like this means a huge change for the family. Every year, more than 4000 children in Germany are diagnosed with life-shortening conditions. These conditions affect the whole family and very often lead to a feeling of overload and collapse – nothing will ever be the same again. Caring for the diseased child is the first priority and, at the same time, everything else becomes less important.

Very often months, sometimes even years, pass between the diagnosis and the death of a child. This time is also very exhausting for both the child’s parents and siblings. In order to provide support for the families, Balthasar was set up in September 1998 as Germany’s first children’s hospice.

Young adults’ hospice

A vivid house; a place to die

Life without a future – This is what young adults with life-shortening conditions have to face, but still want to make the most of.

Being terminally ill means becoming more and more dependent on the support of others – a contradiction to what young adults usually strive for, and thus an enormous burden.

Balthasar young adults’ hospice wants to support young adults to maintain as much normality as possible despite their limitations.

Our highest priority is to maintain the young adults’ quality of life!

Balthasar was Germany’s first young adults’ hospice, opening in 2009.

Our house

Balthasar young adults’ hospice is a bright, vibrant and comfortable house with four beds. Spacious rooms and hallways allow young adults in wheelchairs a lot of room to move.

There is an elevator in the house which ensures access to all floors. The children’s hospice – and with it all its facilities and activities – is accessible via a hallway.
