Living and laughing

“We cannot add days to life, but we can add life to days.” (Cicely Saunders)

At Balthasar children’s hospice the emphasis is on living and laughing. Our aim is to make the most of life by making the life of a child with life-shortening conditions as positive and worth living as possible. Thus, we offer a snoezelen room, music therapy and therapy dogs as well as activities such as reading out to the children, cuddling or just spending time with them.

Dying and grieving

Death and grief are an essential part of Balthasar. Our team supports the families in accordance with their individual needs and worldview. When the children are approaching the end of life, families can stay with us anytime. In this phase, we guarantee dignified support which is in line with the individual needs and wishes of the child and its relatives. Our experienced and qualified team helps families to cope with the difficult situation and to deal with loss and grief by offering emotional and spiritual support.

After the loss of their child, the family can stay at Balthasar and take their time to bid a final farewell. There is a special room in our hospice which can be decorated individually. Also families whose child did not die at Balthasar can use our facilities to bid farewell.

A house full of life; a place to die

Life without a future – this is what young adults with life-shortening conditions have to face, but still want to make the most of.

Being terminally ill means becoming more and more dependent on the support of others – a contradiction to what young adults usually strive for, and thus an enormous burden.

Balthasar young adults’ hospice wants to support young adults to maintain as much normality as possible despite their limitations.

Our highest priority is to maintain the young adults’ quality of life!

Balthasar was Germany’s first young adults’ hospice, opening in 2009.
