The main task of the DZB is the lending of media to blind and partially sighted people. As braille books are often very voluminous and need a lot of space, most people prefer borrowing rather than buying them. In contrast to other libraries our users usually do not visit us to read their requested books. The communication between library and user and the placing of loan requests takes place mainly by phone, email or the internet. Readers can choose from an inventory of currently 50.000 titles. The lending of media is free of charge. The lending period is generally four weeks, yet, this period can be extended for very comprehensive books. The lending period for learners of braille is longer, as their reading skills have not been fully developed, yet. The lending period for braille music books is up to six months, since the users have to memorize the whole music notation.
The DZB lends:
braille books in contracted and non-contracted braille
talking books as DAISY-CDs
braille music books
scientific literature in print on blindness, visual impairments and related topics
Users can search our collection on the internet or can request a catalogue by mail. The catalogues are available online, in print and uncontracted and contracted braille, CD-ROM and DAISY. Users can place their orders by phone or e-mail and can also ask for recommendations on certain topics. Many of our elderly users ask us to work out lists with their preferences. These wish lists are prepared individually – a service our users are very grateful about. Two workdays after one audio book is turned in we can send out another audio book to the user.
Due to legal requirements a proof of disability is to be presented if you want to lend talking books, in order to make sure that the talking books are lent to visually impaired people only.
